Articles covering disability duration guidelines:

  • AAOHN Journal Article on Benchmarking Medical Absence. In the February 2005 issue of the AAOHN Journal, the feature article (offering CE Credit) is "Benchmarking Medical Absence: Measuring the Impact of Occupational Health Nursing". This article explores reasons occupational health nurses must benchmark, how to benchmark, and how to use the results. Industry-standard benchmarking techniques featuring the Official Disability Guidelines database are highlighted, including Grading RTW 101, Incidence and Prevalence Tracking, Outlier Rate, etc. The American Association of Occupational Health Nurses requested the article because of the importance of benchmarking. First developed in working with Dr. Charles Prezzia (Gen. Mgr. Health Svcs. & Medical Dir. of U.S. Steel), these techniques are becoming an industry-framework. In addition to improving outcomes using ODG to manage treatment and return-to-work decisions, users can also benchmark performance retrospectively, to identify best practices. • Evidence Based Duration Guidelines.  From the Journal of Workers Compensation, Summer 2001, lead author Charles Prezzia, MD, MPH, (General Manager of Health Services and Corporate Medical Director, US Steel) compares existing guidelines from ODG, Reed Group, and Milliman USA.
  • Evidence Based Return-to-Work.  From CWCE Magazine (California Workers Comp Enquirer), August 2001, author Linda Stutzman, RN, COHN/CM, PCDM, LNC addresses the medical-legal implications of disability guidelines.

- Safety and Health Magazine, National Safety Council

"Official Disability Guidelines has been greatly enhanced to include new features that users have indicated are crucial in managing disabilities. Analyses of feedback from past experience data has created a 'Best Practice' guideline for each ICD-9-CM. ODG will continue to prove to be an indispensable resource to any organization for setting standards for attendance and paid or unpaid sick time, evaluating workers' compensation claims, managing overtime costs, reviewing and compensating employees, reducing legal liability and controlling insurance premiums."

Each 'Best Practice' guideline recommends durations for each condition, incorporating the pertinent job and treatment criteria, and calculates expected outcomes based on these criteria."

- Case Management Advisor

"Work-Loss Data Institute saw a need for such guidelines as corporate down-sizing has spread nationally during the past 5 to 6 years, which has led to fewer staff members to handle larger workloads. This has increased the staff members' chances of occupational illness or injury while making employee absenteeism and productivity crucial to a business's success or failure."
